Is All Moisture Resistant MDF Green?

In the UK, smaller MR MDF boards are typically green in color for identification purposes, but this color has no direct correlation with the moisture resistance of the boards.

Untinted and brown-colored MR MDF boards are also available in the market, resembling standard MDF. To identify the moisture-resistant properties of such boards, refer to the manufacturer’s technical specification sheet and look for standards related to MDF, such as EN622-5:2009 (which covers moisture resistance).

How is MR MDF Made?

The manufacturing process of MR MDF involves combining wood fibers (wood chippings, recycled offcuts, and sawdust) with moisture-repellent resins and waxes. The mixture is then cooked at a high temperature and pressed under high pressure to create sturdy and uniform panels.

The moisture resistance of MR MDF is achieved by using a moisture-repellent resin to bond the wood fibers together, which is not used in all types of MDF.

This manufacturing process ensures the elimination of knots, air pockets, and grain issues from the MDF boards, resulting in uniform panels with a defect-free and precision finish.
